Relaxation Techniques For Anxiety

Do Anxiety Relaxation Techniques Really Work? My Recovery Experience.

A lot has been written about the importance of relaxation techniques when suffering from anxiety, with some even going so far as to say that relaxation is the magic bullet cure for anxiety.

Relaxation techniques, like deep abdominal breathing. are definitely an important aspect of any anxiety recovery program, but in my experience they are not the most important aspect, and are just one aspect of a fully encompassing recovery strategy.

Let's begin by looking at why it is important. In people suffering from anxiety, the fight or flight aspect of their nervous system is usually overstimulated, causing a number of sometimes bewildering and frightening symptoms. Relaxation strategies, like deep breathing, can help stimulate the "rest and digest" aspect of the nervous system, allowing the system as a whole to come into balance, eventually reducing the severity and occurrence of symptoms.

Sounds good, you might think, and it is. However, if the victim follows deep breathing alone, and does nothing to deal with the cognitive aspects of their recovery that are causing their nervous system to be out of balance, then deep breathing at best can only offer a temporary remedy.

In fact, if someone doesn't address these cognitive aspects, deep breathing may actually make things worse. Why? Well, to give you an example, I used to suffer terrible dizziness in supermarkets. Before I understood anxiety, I would go into the supermarket already fearing what was going to happen. My thoughts would bother me like crazy and the symptoms would begin to escalate before I had even entered the supermarket. So I would start the deep breathing in an effort to minimise my anxiety, believing it should help. However, because I hadn't done anything about my thought patterns, which were still driving me crazy, the deep breathing did little to help. I then started to worry that the deep breathing wasn't helping my anxiety and of course I became even more anxious!!

To make a lasting recovery from anxiety, you must follow an all inclusive strategy, based on an understanding of how the illness really works.
