Panic Attacks

What Is A Panic Attack And How Do You Beat Them? My Recovery Experience.

A panic attack is an episode characterised by a sudden experience of extreme fear or apprehension . They can arise quite suddenly and last for brief duration and are accompanied by a number of sometimes frightening symptoms. This might include dizziness, shortness of breath, racing heart and heart palpitations, nausea, sweating, tingling sensations in the extremities, and a feeling of impending doom.

The effects of a panic attack are variable. Often victims will admit themselves to the ER, particularly during their first attack, fearing that they are experiencing a heart attack or a nervous breakdown. They are not, of course, but this doesn't lessen the severity of the sensations that they feel. When I first experienced my first panic attack, it was, by far, the most single frightening experience of my life. I was convinced that my day's were numbered and that I was imminently about to die.

Panic attacks arise as a response to stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, which is the body's "fight or flight" response. When the SNS is stimulated, such as, for example, when someone finds themselves in a stressful situation, they will begin to experience symptoms like trembling, heart palpitations, hot or cold flashes or sweating. Panic disorder sufferer's have a tendency to interpret these sensations with fear which has the result of increasing their anxiety levels, leaving them prone to panic attacks.

Panic attacks and anxiety are closely related, but are distinguishable from other anxiety disorders by their intensity and episodic nature. They are often experienced in conjunction with anxiety disorders, as anxiety sufferer's have a tendency to stimulate their sympathetic nervous systems more frequently than non-sufferer's.

Whilst strongly associated with stress and anxiety though, panic attacks are not necessarily always triggered by anxiety, and there are a number of other factors that can cause them to arise. For example, panic disorder has been found to run in families, and is associated with certain biological causes like hypoglycaemia, mitral valve prolapse, and Wilson's disease. For persistent sufferer's it is important to have these conditions ruled out before judging appropriate treatments.
