Panic Attack Treatments

The Truth About Panic Attack Treatments. My Recovery Experience...

Before beginning any panic attack treatments, you have to first be certain if there are underlying causes for your panic attacks. For the most part, panic attacks can arise as a result of stress of anxiety. However, there are a number of medical conditions like hypoglycaemia, mitral valve prolapse or Grave's Disease the include panic attacks as part of their symptoms. If you suffer from attacks and have been properly medically diagnosed, it is important to make sure that you see a doctor to make sure that you don't need treatment for any of these conditions.

If your doctor diagnoses stress or anxiety as a principle cause for your panic attacks, then your treatment will depend upon the severity of the symptoms. Panic attacks can arise when the body is simply overstiumulated from stress. In such circumstances, treatment might be as simple as taking some time out to rest and look after yourself a bit better to allow your body and nervous system time to recuperate.

If panic attacks are persistent or starting to take control of your life, and stop you from functioning, then there are several treatments that might be prescribed.

Medication, in the form of anti-depressants, tranquillizers (like Valium), and sometimes sleeping tablets might be offered by your doctor.

In my experience, these can leave you feeling jaded and 'spacey', and don't really offer a long term solution. Medication is by no means an exact science, and doctors often have to try different prescriptions and doses before they find a combination that you can tolerate.

Even when they do though, they can also complicate recovery, as some of these medications can actually cause panic attacks. I remember one anti-depressant I took actually did this to me.

At best I would say that medication can provide some relief if panic attacks or extreme anxiety prevent you from even being able to think clearly about your illness, but it is only likely to be one piece of the puzzle. This was certainly the case with me.

In more severe cases of treating panic attacks, you have to take a holistic view to make a long term recovery. You will implement strategies for adjusting your mindset, your diet, the way you exercise, and the way you look after yourself. Medication might be a part of your recovery, but it doesn't have to be, and in my experience people can make a full recovery without the need for medications.
