How To Stop Anxiety Attacks

Anxiety Attacks Can Become So Severe They Stop You From Being Able To Live A Normal Life. In This Article We Take A Look At What Steps You Need To Take To Stop Anxiety Attacks.

Before you can ever attempt to stop an anxiety or panic attack you first have to understand what you're dealing with. A panic attack is when your body is literally overwhelmed by a sensation of fear or apprehension that might have a visible perceived cause (like flying for example) or it might not have any tangible cause and just appear without warning. The symptoms of a panic attack are rapid heart beat, sweating, nausea, shortness of breath and a tingling in your hands and feet - amongst other things.

An anxiety or panic attack starts when your body activates its "fight or flight" response which is normally only used during moments of extreme danger where your life may be at risk. Your body flushes itself full of a hormone called adrenaline which starts your heart racing, speeds up your breathing and provides you with a surge of strength and energy to either escape or protect yourself. The shaking that you experience during a panic attack isn't actually from fear - it's your body trying to either run or fight back and you're preventing it from doing either.

So most people having their first panic attack head straight for the ER simply because they're certain they're having a heart attack and to be fair the symptoms of a heart attack are very, very similar to an anxiety attack. From personal experience I can safely say that the first panic attack I ever had to deal with left me feeling like I was actually going to die and, like most people, I headed straight for the ER because I thought I was either having a full blown heart attack or possibly a nervous breakdown.

As it turns out it was neither and after several attempts at diagnosis a doctor finally realized what was "wrong" with me and set about trying to treat me but I didn't want to treat my panic attacks - I wanted to stop them completely and get my life back to normal again. And by the stage I wanted to stop them my life was anything but normal; I'd gone from being a perfectly healthy 30-something family man to a Howard Hughes-esque recluse who rarely, if ever, left my home and all of this because caused by an anxiety attack after taking a serious fall in my shower.

I knew for certain that I didn't want to be taking medication for the rest of my life so I needed to find a way to actually stop the anxiety attacks. And in my search for a cure I found the key to stopping anxiety attacks wasn't to actually stop them from happening but allow them to happen and better understand the causes and patterns that brought them about in the first place.

Einstein once said, "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them" and this approach is essential to actually curing yourself of panic attacks because you need to change how you approach the problem and to eliminate panic attacks from your life you truly need to understand them first.
