Anxiety And Panic Attacks

What Are They And How Do You Recover From Them?

Anxiety and panic attacks are often grouped together along with other anxiety disorders like social anxiety, OCD and even phobias. Anxiety, in and of itself is not necessarily a problem, and in some cases is completely normal. We have all felt anxiety when taking a test, or when entering unfamiliar circumstances. Anxiety only becomes a problem when excessive worry or fear interferes with normal daily functioning. It can be generalized, and so characterised by a general sense of unease or worry over a range of non-specific circumstances. Or it may be specific, such as worry over being in certain social situations, or worry over the state of one's health, to give some examples.

A panic attack can arise as a result of extreme anxiety about a particular situation or circumstances. I suffered from panic attacks after I became ill with a severe illness that one night caused me to collapse through a glass shower door in the bathroom. Upon regaining consciousness from my fall I found myself in what I now know was an extreme panic attack, that caused a number of distressing symptoms:

- Sweating
- Palpitations
- Racing Heart
- Dizziness
- Tingling Hands and Feet
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea
- A feeling of intense fear like I was somehow dying.

Despite having a number of tests that confirmed nothing sinister, I still continued to suffer from panic attacks whenever I had to use the bathroom. I would begin to worry about going to the bathroom before I even went, and my anxiety would begin to escalate. I would wait until the last minute to go to the bathroom, out of fear about whether I would collapse again, or whether I would suffer another attack. I can't begin to tell you how much courage it even took to do this formally very simple task.

My story escalated until I had spent nearly 3 months in hospital, and tried a range of treatments, but I made a full recovery and am now passionate about helping others to do the same thing.
